In the heart of hearts of the new central bus station in the Neve Sha’anan neighborhood in south Tel Aviv, the Fresco House for Dance and Culture has been operating since 2017 In the twilight zone of the margins of Israeli society, where veteran residents alongside new immigrants and asylum seekers wage an everyday war for survival, a new initiative takes root. Led by dancer, choreographer and founder of Fresco Dance Company Yoram Karmi, this initiative reaches out into the periphery of Israeli society to affect change. In the few years since its establishment and against all odds, Yoram Karmi’s dance house has become a dynamic hub for multidisciplinary creation, drawing thousands of visitors to this neglected and shunned area. The venue includes 3 rehearsal studios from which one of them also serves as performance space, with the possibility of professional stage lighting, sounds and tribunes for around 100 audience members. Guests of the dance house include artists from the dance field as well as other performances arts, audiences and community members from all ages.

Despite the modest resources available to the initiative, Fresco Hub For Dance and art has become, in a short period of time, an engine for local growth. This is thanks to its visionary direction, which believes in creativity and the maximization of abilities, outside-of-the-box thinking, diverse artistic endeavors and uncompromising quality. Our work is expansive with an emphasis on educational and social engagement within the gray areas of society. “In the midst of difficulty lies opportunity,” said Albert Einstein. At Fresco we believe that art that is not blind to its surroundings has the power to strengthen the foundations of society in which it operates, to enrich it and to make it better. By working together, the community of artists and marginalized communities can blossom from within the hardships they encounter. The unprecedented success that the Fresco House has marked to this point is just a small taste of the enormous potential. As a cultural broker, Fresco is able to cultivate bonds between outlying communities, create bridges between different rungs of Israeli society and present equal opportunity through culture, art and multidisciplinary creation.

We plan to continue our existing educational activities by reaching out to new territories and communities in Israel as well as abroad. We would like to establish a norm of ongoing, everyday educational and cultural events in the southern Tel Aviv neighborhoods and in the periphery and to make cultural engagements an integral part of life in these challenged areas. Our goal is to encourage original Israeli creations by providing rehearsal space for independent artists through our residency program. We strive to make the south of the city accessible to those from other areas and to build cultural and personal bridges between different communities in the city through joined activities for children of the neighborhoods of south Tel Aviv and from further afield. Within the central bus station, we wish to renovate abandoned spaces, turning them into creative incubators within the public sphere. We plan to expand our workshop series and master classes for professional dancers and students of dance programs throughout the country and alongside this, to open a professional dance school for children, which will operate in parallel to the company.

The coronavirus period, and the successful initiatives born out of the crisis, proved beyond a doubt the important role played by The Fresco House in the Israeli cultural and social scene and the tremendous potential of the institution as a cultural center located on the fringes of Tel Aviv and attracts diverse audiences who are thirsty for quality content and creators alike. Moreover, the immediate response to the crisis proved that it is a leading body with a deep familiarity with the territory and a supreme sensitivity to the needs of both creators and audiences.
