A new dance creation for Fresco Dance Company by the promising Czech choreographer Sylva Šafková.
Šafková was invited to expand a duet originally created in Prague into a piece for seven dancers. This socially and politically charged work, full of nuance and irony, traces the underlying reasons why so many things go wrong in our daily lives as individuals, and even more so as members of society facing its many challenges.
From the text accompanying the performance:
"I’ve come to the conclusion that there are three main reasons why things go wrong. Sometimes it’s simply bad luck, and there isn’t much we can do about it. At other times, it may result from a wrong decision. Of course, we can always try to be wiser, more careful, or more sensible, but eventually we all reach the limits of our abilities. And that leaves us with the third reason things go wrong: there is always someone involved who is a scoundrel.
Scoundrels are the most common reason things go wrong in our society.
There isn’t a single specific trait that makes someone a scoundrel, and there are many types: the rude scoundrel, the condescending scoundrel, the presidential or political scoundrel, and many more…
One could safely say: we are blessed here with a wide variety of scoundrels."
